Inspired by a creative colony which became a mecca for colliding cultures and creativity, the Mabel Dodge Luhan ranch house in Taos, provided refuge for artists like D.H. Lawrence from the constraints of society and freedom for an alternative lifestyle. Other artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Ansel Adams, Martha Graham, and Millicent Rodgers gathered in this community in the early half of the 1900s. Dennis Hopper purchased the ranch in the 1970s and with his Easy Rider fame and his new wife, Michelle Phillips from the Mammas and the Papas, began a new creative colony for film and art. The Hotel Chelsea has long had a similar legend of attracting musicians, artists, and writers to the city’s creative sanctuary.
